What’s New in PerGeos 1.7

Thermo Scientific™ PerGeos Software 1.7 is now available. This new version introduces many new features and enhancements, including:

Customers with active maintenance at the time of the release will be automatically notified about the availability of these new versions.

A pore network model representing the pore-space of a Berea sandstone sample, with grains and clays represented by light and dark gray colors, respectively.

Capillary pressure, relative permeability and resistivity index plots are generated for each simulated two-phase flow process.

New Pore Network Flow Extension with two-phase flow simulation capabilities

The Pore Network Flow Extension offers a platform for simulating two-phase flow processes in porous rocks. The pore-space is modeled by a pore network model that is built based on a 3D image of the rock sample. The primary drainage, water flooding and secondary drainage processes can be simulated using the two-phase flow simulation tool. The wettability of the rock-fluid system is modeled by assigning contact angle distributions for each two-phase flow process. The saturation-dependent properties of relative permeability, capillary pressure and resistivity index are calculated for each simulated process.

New Meshing Workspace with seamless tetrahedral mesh generation

The Meshing Workspace is introduced in PerGeos Software 1.7. Using this workspace, tetrahedral meshes are generated directly on labeled voxel data. The underlying algorithm for generating a mesh is based on Delaunay refinement. With this new workspace, generating a volume mesh has been made easier and more seamless. Multiple options are available for optimizing or refining the mesh.

The tetrahedral mesh generated in the Meshing Workspace can be exported in a variety of formats and used in third-party applications. Fluent, Abaqus and NASTRAN are just a few of the formats in which the tetrahedral mesh can be exported.

New Petrophysics extension tools

Velocity profile is generated as a result of a Lattice Boltzmann flow simulation. Labels mapping and number of processors are specified in the Absolute Permeability Lattice Boltzmann tool. 

Lattice Boltzmann-based absolute permeability calculation

A new Lattice Boltzmann-based fluid flow simulator is introduced in PerGeos Software 1.7. This new solver utilizes fully parallel CPU computations and has a smaller memory footprint compared to the legacy absolute permeability solver in PerGeos Software. The user can set the number of processors to use for this simulation. Fluid flow in larger samples can be simulated using this new solver. The user can run flow simulations in all three principal directions to obtain the full, absolute permeability tensor. In addition, a velocity profile is generated along the macroscopic direction of flow.

Clays can be included in the calculations in Formation Factor Random Walk. Convergence data are plotted as a result of simulation in three principal directions.

Random Walk-based formation factor calculation

A new electrical conductance simulator based on the Random Walk technique is introduced. The Random Walk technique simplifies the calculation of formation factor and generates faster results compared to the legacy formation factor tool in the Petrophysics module. In addition, due to the smaller memory footprint, it enables calculation of formation factor on larger samples. In this new solver, there is an option for the user to include the micro-porous phase; i.e., the clays, in the calculations. Four different types of clays and three types of brines are available to choose for the simulations. 

Enhancements to slab processing tools

Slab processing tools were first introduced in PerGeos Software 1.5 for processing large out-of-core data. In PerGeos Software 1.7, a number of additional tools were introduced to this set, providing more flexibility and supporting recipes with grayscale and label outputs as well as those with multiple inputs.

An 80 GB dataset acquired on a Thermo Scientific™ HeliScan™ microCT is processed and segmented on a machine with 32 GB of memory, using the Recipe by slab tools in PerGeos Software 1.7.

Core Profile Extension enhancements

The user can now visualize any data, including segmented rock types, fractures and laminations overlaid on their CT images in the Core Profile Workspace. In addition, the XY slice indicator can be picked and dragged in the viewer. 

Segmented rock types data is overlaid with CT images using the new Overlay Visualization section in Core Profile. 

XY slice indicator can be picked, and its associated depth is displayed in length units in Core Profile. 

The user can select to keep or remove the result from a step in a recipe.

Recipes enhancements

In previous versions of PerGeos Software, the user could remove or keep the intermediate results from a recipe all together. In PerGeos Software 1.7, an additional option allows users to keep results from one or more steps of the recipe by selecting them directly in the Recipes panel. This enables the user to minimize the amount of memory usage during the execution of a recipe and also keeps the important results from a select number of steps.

PerGeos Software upgrades

PerGeos Software 1.7 is a regular upgrade and will be provided free of charge to all users under valid maintenance.

  • The new Pore Network Flow extension with two-phase flow simulation capabilities is available under the new PerGeos Software Pore Network Flow license.
  • The Lattice Boltzmann-Based absolute permeability and Random Walk-based formation factor calculations are available under the PerGeos Software Petrophysics license.
  • The Core Profile Extension enhancements are available under the PerGeos Software Core Profile license.
