Knowing where to drill and which acreage to produce first often rely on the review and analysis of legacy well data from logs, cores, cuttings, and data from other disciplines such as geology and seismic. The ability to process, and in many cases, model data and measurements from old or damaged cores with new techniques and today's knowledge about the formation can help operators decide which fields to explore first and where to place exploration wells.

FEI has a unique workflow to derive rock properties from non-standard rock samples to help exploration teams analyze old, damaged, or partial cores and drill cuttings to understand the regional depositional environments and Total Organic Content (TOC) so you "know before you go" if the target has potential. With patented technology and workflows, our service team can provide static petrophysical properties such as porosity, elasticity, formation factor, and absolute permeability that can be used to help prioritize and rank leasehold positions.

In highly heterogeneous reservoirs , the information from high-resolution microscopy (primarily SEM, FIBSEM, and automated mineralogy datasets) can be used to analyze pores, orientations, aspect ratios, and rock composition to determine variability in reservoir quality. Details about the pore type, shape, and size can be used to understand velocity anisotropy, which can help with seismic interpretation.
In areas where it is essentially cost-prohibitive to core a well, such as deepwater offshore, Arctic locations, and HPHT environments, or where geometric drilling is utilized, the FEI QEMSCAN Wellsite imaging system can provide valuable geological insight to help calibrate well logs onsite during drilling.

Digital Rock for Unconventional Resources

FEI digital rock workflows for unconventional resources utilizes a multi-scale imaging process that includes plug selection and screening, locating specific regions of interest for further investigation utilizing high-resolution microCT imaging with HeliScan, and analyzing thin section SEM, and in some cases FIBSEM, datasets to unlock the secrets of porosity, nano-porosity and total organic content.  Our proprietary image registration process, VoxelPerfect, and unique staining and time-lapse imaging capabilities enables exact modeling of pore distribution and organic labeling that can be useful in understanding diagenetic processes and assessing reservoir maturity.
